What is Ofloxacin?

Ofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. The drug was first introduced in the late 1980s and has since gained widespread acceptance as an effective medication due to its wide range of activity against different types of bacteria. Ofloxacin is used to treat infections of the urinary tract, respiratory system, skin, soft tissues, bones, and joints.

The chemical structure of ofloxacin consists of a six-membered fluorinated heterocyclic ring and two additional rings, a carboxylic acid group. The drug inhibits the bacterial topoisomerase II and IV enzymes, which are involved in DNA replication and repair. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of double-stranded DNA breaks and ultimately bacterial death. Ofloxacin has a broad spectrum of activity and can target both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
