FRP or Fiber Reinforced Polymer rebar is a type of reinforced bar that is made from fibers of polymer composites such as glass, carbon, or basalt. These fibers are bound together with a resin matrix to form a solid structure.
In comparison to traditional steel reinforcement bars, FRP rebars have some significant advantages. Firstly, they are significantly lighter than steel and are easily maneuverable. They are also non-conductive, which means they do not interfere with electrical fields and are suitable for use in areas where electromagnetic interference is a concern. FRP rebars also do not corrode when exposed to harsh environmental conditions, unlike steel bars, meaning they maintain their strength and integrity over time.
FRP rebars can be used as an alternative to conventional steel rebar in various applications, including bridges, highways, marine structures, buildings, tunnels, and other civil engineering projects. Among different types of FRP rebar, glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebar is the most common due to its high strength and stiffness values.
